OMEGA Models
The latest kit from Jan Blik of OMEGA Models is the long awaited Alexeyev I-211 (Alexejev I-211) in 1/72. A completely resin kit with a vacuform canopy, the parts are excellently detailed, good fit and very smooth. The canopy is well formed and even the nose landing light is included! Decals are good, but on some numbers and logo there is a gray background for one of the prototypes. Normally this is not an issue, however, if the modeler wishes to do the Tushino fly-by version, which was all red (Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft: 1875-1995, by Bill Gunston, Osprey, 1995) this can be a problem.
Instructions are very informative including the history of the aircraft, dimensions, reference, color assembly plate and paint guide. Colors needed are also listed.
Of course being a resin kit, parts are still attached to the trees. The best way to remove them is with a micro-saw. Then sand until smooth.
The Alexeyev I-211 was the first of about nine planned prototypes for this short-lived OKB. Other designs included the I-212, I-213, I-214, I-215, I-216, I-217, I-218 II and I-221 before the bureau was dissolved for political reasons. Additionally Alexeyev was the fifth Soviet OKB to put a turbojet fighter prototype into the air (after the Mikoyan-Gureyvich MiG-9, Yakovlev Yak-15, Lavochkin La-150 and Sukhoi Su-9K). And the sixth Soviet designer to do so (the Berezenyak/Isaiev BI-6-lll was powered solely by two Merkulov DM-4 ramjets, having the rocket engine removed, making it technically the first Soviet jet-propelled aircraft in 1943).
Ironically, the first turbojet powered flight in Russia was by the Russian Liberation Army Air Force (Русская Освободительная Армия Военно-воздушные силы-POABBC), supported by the Luftwaffe, flying a Messerschmitt Me-262 (History Channel, Secret Luftwaffe of World War II).
For this kit and other rare and hard-to-find subjects, please visit OMEGA Models at www.omega-models.com.
We will be doing a build review as soon as physically possible.
